Trophy Pond in Mississippi

Mississippi pond stocking, lake management and construction

Mississippi has the same warm climate as Alabama and Georgia, and the fish we raise thrive in it. We help Mississippi landowners stock, manage and build lakes and ponds that grow big bass and bluegill.

1Mississippi

Mississippi water, Tennessee‑raised fish

Mississippi's climate is the same as Georgia's and Alabama's, and the Florida bass and coppernose bluegill we raise on our Hohenwald farm thrive there.

Mississippi State University Extension recommends stocking bream in the fall and bass the following spring, and says Florida bass and largemouth are both acceptable but should not be mixed in one pond. We set the species, numbers and timing for your pond after we have seen it.

Results in climates like Mississippi's

We have no published Mississippi case study yet. Our closest results in the same climate are in Alabama and Georgia: a two-acre central Alabama pond stocked new in April 2020 grew a 1 lb 10 oz coppernose by November 2021, and a 22‑acre north Georgia lake produced a 13‑pound bass in 2018.

4Rules and permits

Mississippi rules that shape a lake

General information, not legal advice. The agencies make the final call, and we review your site against the rules before work starts.

WhereWhat can apply
MississippiThe Department of Environmental Quality must give written authorization before a dam is built, changed or repaired, unless it is under 8 feet high, holds less than 25 acre-feet, or does not hold back a continuously flowing stream and could not threaten public safety downstream. A surface water impoundment permit can apply even then, and clearing an acre or more brings construction stormwater rules.
Every stateSection 404 of the Clean Water Act covers filling streams and wetlands. Farm and stock ponds are on the EPA exemption list, with exceptions, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers decides whether a site is a regulated water. Nobody should tell you your lake is exempt before that check.

Grass carp: Verified triploids. Mississippi State University Extension recommends only verified triploid grass carp in Mississippi ponds (MSU Extension). We confirm the current state rule with you before stocking.

When should a Mississippi pond be stocked?

Mississippi State University Extension recommends bream in the fall and bass the following spring for a new or renovated pond. We set the order and timing for yours.
